The Norwich City Council Liberal Democrat group are calling for the BBC Proms in the Park spectacular to come to Norwich.

The event which takes place on the Last Night of the Proms is centred around a live concert with high-profile artists and presenters and culminates in a live Big Screen link-up to the Royal Albert Hall. The events are broadcast live on BBC Radio and Television and last year were staged in Carrickfergus, Glasgow, London, Swansea and the Tees Valley.

Liberal Democrat City Councillor for Thorpe Hamlet and music fan Jeremy Hooke says:

"I have enjoyed the Proms for many years. It would be incredible for our fine city to host such a prestigious and high profile event."

Last years events attracted artists such as Lesley Garrett, Juan Diego Florez, Julian Lloyd Webber and various BBC orchestra and symphony groups. There was even a special guest appearance by pop star Will Young. These plans build upon the work by the Norwich City Liberal Democrat group to promote Norwich as a cultural and tourist destination of the highest calibre. The group are keen to stress not just the cultural significance of this event but also the economic benefits holding an international event like this one could have.

Cllr Hooke will ask a question at the next Council meeting calling on the Labour administration to investigate the possibility of staging the event.
